Years: 2017–Present

Introduction

In a world craving personalized, meaningful products, The Cut & Etch was born to blend technology and craftsmanship. This venture transforms any geographic location into beautiful laser-engraved keepsakes, addressing a growing demand from gift shops, galleries, and individual customers for unique items tied to memories and places.

The Challenge

Retailers and customers sought bespoke products that could be made efficiently and at scale without losing craftsmanship quality. The key challenge was developing a reliable and repeatable process to turn map data into high-resolution designs that could be engraved on wood, ceramic, and other materials.

The Solution

The cornerstone of the business is CartoCuts, a proprietary software tool that automates the conversion of map data into detailed vector files optimized for laser engraving. Combined with strong branding and a curated product line, this approach creates a seamless supply chain from digital map to finished product.

Key Components

  • CartoCuts software: Automates creation of precise, high-quality, engravable maps from any location.
  • Product line: Includes cutting boards, coasters, wall art, and other items made from premium materials.
  • E-commerce and wholesale: Direct B2C sales through a Shopify storefront alongside wholesale partnerships with museums and gift shops, mainly in the Seattle area.

The Approach

The business focused on creating a cohesive brand experience encompassing product design, photography, and customer service. Production workflows balanced mass scalability with the customization those personalized products demand.

Impact

  • Established a sustainable small business with a strong base of loyal customers.
  • Enabled museums and retailers to offer unique products that strengthen their connection with visitors and clients.
  • Maintained operational flexibility to serve both direct consumers and wholesale clients efficiently.

Reflections & Lessons Learned

The combination of custom software automation and artisan-driven production can unlock new retail opportunities at scale. The Cut & Etch exemplifies how technology can enhance, not replace, craftsmanship while creating products that resonate with personal stories.
